The Finnish case confusion is real

You are learning Finnish and you’re making great progress with vocabulary and phrases. You have (hopefully) started getting some speaking practice in, too. But you are confused by the different case endings and changing word stems.

What is the partitive? When do you use it?
How do you form the genitive?
What’s the deal with the object cases?

Do you often find yourself confused by the nitty gritty of one of the biggest Finnish grammar topics – the case system? Do you feel like your Finnish textbook just doesn’t provide enough examples or an explanation (in English) as to what the 15 different Finnish cases are used for?

It may make you feel insecure about forming phrases and sentences. Do I use -lla or -lta? What is the difference between “Minä luen kirjaa” and “Minä luen kirjan“?

I want to make one thing clear: these questions and insecurities are not the thing that should be stopping you from speaking Finnish. However, they are very common ones. And those questions become relevant once you are ready to upgrade your Finnish skills from simple conversations to more meaningful and advanced use of the language.

Maybe you are aiming to get to a level where you can complete a degree in Finnish or read newspapers and understand complex Finnish structures. Understanding the Finnish cases provides a very good basis for learning more advanced Finnish.

I created a course to help you master the basics of the Finnish cases. I am proud of how many people have told me that my way of explaining the complicated grammar details have helped them grasp the Finnish language better than before.

Introducing Case by Case

A self-study course for Finnish learners who want to learn and practise the Finnish cases.

Here’s what the course covers:

Word types

What is a word type? What is a word stem and why does it matter in Finnish grammar? How do words that end in -nen or -uus function?

Learn how to form each case

Each case is studied indivially in terms of how you form it. You will be able to practise forming them by completing interactive exercises.

Learn when to use each case

Now we get to the fun part. You will learn lots of examples of WHEN each case should be used. You get to focus on the meaning and really think about different scenarios in which you have to make a choice between different cases.

Once you've completed a tutorial, you get to apply what you've learned in different exercises. The course is full of interactive exercises that can be completed again and again to solidify your skills.

About me

Hi! I’m Emmi, your online Finnish instructor.

If you want to boost your Finnish language studies, you’ve come to the right place. I’m a native Finnish speaker and a keen language learner myself, so I know all about the process you’re going through. I created Finking Cap so that I could help Finnish learners from all over the world improve their Finnish. My expertise is Finnish grammar and breaking it down for my students so that it makes sense to them.

I’m especially proud of the Case by Case course. It is my most studied course, and it warms my heart every time I get a message from someone saying that the course has helped them understand the Finnish cases better.

Don't just take my word for it.
Here's what people are saying about this course:

"Truly special"

I must say, after starting your course on the Finnish cases (so just one of the many many courses you have) I am amazed at the quality of the teaching and work you have done. It's amazing. I really enjoy doing the exercises, and the way you've put things together is just great. Thank you for the hard work! ... I have an eye to recognize when someone does something truly special and I think you are one of them. I have looked for many years for a way to learn Finnish that would be like you are presenting it. It fits me perfectly well. Thank you!

"I started to understand how the language works"

I was already studying Finnish and living in Finland when I found the Case by Case Finnish course. For me, as a Portuguese speaking person, understanding the cases in Finnish was the hardest thing. Studying Finnish with a native teacher that can explain the intricate parts of the language in great English was decisive for me, I gained the confidence I needed and started to understand how the language works, I was thinking for myself and not just repeating rules from a book. The materials are great and easy to understand, Emmi is very patient and has great teaching skills (and also a huge sense of humour!)! This course is something that I will keep revising for many years until I can really master the Finnish language.

"Emmi is very knowledgeable and she explains ideas clearly"

I loved the course Case by Case. I am a very beginner in learning Finnish and I was able to go at my own pace. Emmi is very knowledgeable and she explains ideas clearly. Whenever I had any questions, she got back to me right away. She always checks to make sure her students understand what is being presented.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, there are no live lessons. It is completely self-study.

You can pay by using Paypal or a credit card (Stripe). All payments are handled by those payment processors and are secure.

I’m there to help! Just write a comment in the lesson page comment section, and I’ll write an answer as soon as I can (although at weekends I take some time off, so it may not be within the same day).

I do recommend this course to students who know English well. That’s because the language of instruction is English and I use English to provide comparisons between Finnish and other languages.

I recommend starting Case by Case when you master at least some of the basic vocabulary and grammar, such as the personal pronouns, the verb olla in different persons, some common verbs, colours, numbers, common household items…

If you are a complete beginner, this course may be a little overwhelming for you. However, beginner students who have a thing for grammar have liked the course, so if you are one of those people who geek out on Finnish grammar from day one, this can definitely be your course!

Having said that, if you’re considering the membership option, there is a beginner course available inside the Finking Cap Club.
