Watch this video to learn the weekdays in Finnish! You’ll not only learn the basic forms of the weekdays, but you’ll also learn a few simple example sentences to go with them. Some sentences come in 2 different versions: Standard Finnish and spoken Finnish.

There are other Finnish dialects, too

Remember, the spoken Finnish sentences you hear in this lesson aren’t the only possible versions, as there are lots and lots of different dialects in Finnish. However, I’ve picked some of the most common ways to say those sentences for this video.

Example sentences:

 

maanantai = Monday

Standard Finnish:

Tänään on maanantai.

= It’s Monday today.

Spoken Finnish:

Tänää on maanantai.

 

maanantaina = on Monday

Standard Finnish:

Minulla on suomen kurssi maanantaina.

= I have a Finnish course on Monday.

Spoken Finnish:

Mulla on suomen kurssi maanantaina.

 


 

tiistai = Tuesday

Standard Finnish:

Onko tänään tiistai?

= Is it Tuesday today?

Spoken Finnish:

Onks tänää tiistai?

 

tiistaina = on Tuesday

Standard Finnish:

Tiistaina menen hammaslääkäriin.

= On Tuesday, I’m going to the dentist’s.

Spoken Finnish:

Tiistaina mä meen hammaslääkärii.

 


 

keskiviikko = Wednesday

Standard Finnish:

Keskiviikko on viikon paras päivä.

= Wednesday is the best day of the week.

Spoken Finnish:

(can be the same as standard Finnish)

 

keskiviikkona = on Wednesday

Standard Finnish:

Onko sinulla paljon töitä keskiviikkona?

= Do you have a lot of work on Wednesday?

Spoken Finnish:

Onks sulla paljon töitä keskiviikkona?

 


 

torstai = Thursday

Standard Finnish:

Sopiiko torstai sinulle?

= Is Thursday ok with you?

Spoken Finnish:

Sopiiks torstai sulle?

 

torstaina = on Thursday

Standard Finnish:

Tavataanko torstaina?

= Shall we meet on Thursday?

Spoken Finnish:

Tavataaks torstaina?

 


 

perjantai = Friday

Standard Finnish:

Perjantai sopii minulle. Nähdään silloin!

= Friday suits me. See you then!

Spoken Finnish:

Perjantai sopii mulle. Nähää silloin!

 

perjantaina = on Friday

Standard Finnish:

Nähdään perjantaina!

= See you on Friday!

Spoken Finnish:

Nähää perjantaina!

 


 

lauantai = Saturday

Standard Finnish:

Tänään ei ole lauantai.

= It’s not Saturday today.

Spoken Finnish:

Tänää ei oo lauantai.

 

lauantaina = on Saturday

Standard Finnish:

Haluatko mennä lauantaina elokuviin?

= Do you want to go to the cinema on Saturday?

Spoken Finnish:

Haluutsä mennä lauantaina elokuvii?

 


 

sunnuntai = Sunday

Standard Finnish:

Sunnuntai on viikon hiljaisin päivä.

= Sunday is the quietest day of the week.

Spoken Finnish:

(can be the same as standard Finnish)

 

sunnuntaina = on Sunday

Standard Finnish:

Sunnuntaina sataa.

= It’s going to rain on Sunday.

Spoken Finnish:

(can be the same as standard Finnish)
